Modern Rustic Escape
'tiny' home design

The challenge for this assignment was creating a livable structure with in a 12 cubic foot space. Inspired by the 'tiny' home movement I wanted to create a unique escape fit for a couple or a single person. Keeping it to the necessities, I was able to provide a lounging space, fully-functional kitchenette and a lofted bed which sits above a bathroom. Looking to biophilia for inspiration I opted to use natural materials throughout with a soft color palette, not to distract from the full glass window on the front side of the structure, bringing nature in through a modern design.

Biophilic Modern Accessible Bathroom

This bathroom is highly sustainable, accessible, and economically friendly. All of the wood used in the shower floor, bench, vanity, and shelving is made out of 100% natural bamboo plywood and lumber. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable species due to its rapid growth and abundance. It is also very strong and flexible, making it perfect for cabinetry and flooring. Another great aspect of bamboo is that it stands up to water very well, making it perfect for a bathroom.  All other fixtures and finishes in this bathroom are economically friendly and relatively heavy duty so they will last a long time.

Being an ADA bathroom I wanted to maximize open floor space. The shower is approximately half the length of the bathroom making it compliant with standards for a roll in shower. I also incorporated a bench in the shower as another option for the handicapped. Although the shower is quite massive, there is still an abundance of floor space between the vanity and toilet.  I believe this bathroom, will appeal to all users while still being highly accessible.

Eclectic Accessible Kitchen

For this design I wanted to create something unique. The best style I could think of drew inspiration from a few different styles, the product being eclectic in nature. The clients can be described as a traditional Italian family. Growing up in an Italian family I knew it was important to have plentiful space for everyone to be able to cook together in the kitchen. I created a custom built island with turned legs, bringing in that traditional aspect.

Other finishes in this kitchen include a bright white subway tile to bring a modern aesthetic. I also created a built in nook seating space which allows flexibility in seating and maximizes accessibility. For an extra surprise, I added a wood burning pizza oven and a wine cooler, which is built in to the island piece. My design also features a transom window above the cabinets bringing in extra natural light without eliminating storage.
